I cant affort to get all the card I would like and this is a good second choice on the original cards

Great book

I had forgotten that this was issued back in the latter 1980s but Topps and the publisher did a wonderful job of organizing and capturing every single card issued in this era by the company. It brought back floods of memories and it would take years of collecting at massive dollar amounts to be able to see this much of my childhood captured so intensely and succinctly. I truly enjoy it!

I have been looking for books for our literature curriculum written by and based on Asian cultures. Unfortunately, it isn't terribly easy to find something that both fits those categories and is a worthwhile book to read in class with middle school students. Oh, there are books out there, but so many of them are written by American or European authors about Asian cultures. I was happy to find Revolution is not a Dinner Party by Ying Chang Compestine, a story about a young girl growing up in China at the end of Mao Ze-dong's Cultural Revolution.Ling is nine years old and her biggest dream is to see the United States. Her father teaches her English in secret, shows her pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge, and they sing English songs and read English books. But something is happening in China that threatens her family's way of life. Both her parents are doctors- her father of Western medicine and her mother of traditional Chinese medicine. During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, if you weren't working class, you were considered extravagant and wasteful, and Ling's parents fell into that category.When a Maoist officer moves into their apartment building, everyone in the building is careful because he has the power to make them all disappear if they are thought to be an anti-revolutionist against Mao. When Ling's neighbor, another doctor, disappears, Ling begins to slowly understand the severity of the situation. Then the neighbor's wife is taken and their son moves in with Ling's family. When he is found trying to escape to Hong Kong, he turns on Ling's family and turns them in to save himself. Ling's father is arrested and Ling and her mother must survive on their own with ration dollars becoming fewer and fewer and food in the black market more and more unreliable. Trying to protect her mother, Ling takes over getting food for the family and tries to stay out of trouble. Unfortunately, she has too much of her father in her and can't bear to swallow her pride when confronted by bullies at school and their Maoist parents. Will Ling's fate be any better than the millions of others who were murdered or disappeared during the Cultural Revolution?This is a fast, small book that really blew me away. It reminded me a lot of Marjane Satrapi's graphic memoir Persepolis in that the main character is a young girl dealing with very mature, life threatening situations she doesn't completely understand. I feel like this perspective is important for students because they can see how the events that unfold are wrong through an innocent child's eyes. It is also interesting to see students critically analyze the naivete of the main character, especially since they are children themselves! It is important for children to relate to a culture they don't know much about, so having a common thread helps make the book more meaningful to them.I have read some reviews on this book that criticize it for being "historical fiction" rather than a memoir, but I am not sure what is wrong with this. The author grew up in China during the Revolution and based the characters and events off her own experiences. Despite being fiction, the story is steeped in the author's life, making this just as powerful a story even if it isn't a memoir. I still think it is a valuable tool for exposing students to a culture they might not have been exposed to.This is a perfect book for middle reader students, although the subject matter is serious and it could be used for an older, low-skilled student who likes historical fiction. I imagine this book being appropriate for grades 5-8 for the most part. At the end there is an explanation from the author of how the events in the book relate to her own life. There is also a brief explanation of the historical background, which might be better if read with students first, before the story. This would be a valuable book for any student to read!

This novel is similar to Anchee Min's Red Azalea, which I prefer. The protagonist in Revolution Is Not is something of a heroine & the plot is engineered so that she's more daring & has better luck than would be the case in an autobiography or more realistic fiction.

I don't know how historically accurate this book is. But, having lived in China for a year, I know that much of what she describes did indeed happen during the Cultural Revolution. The book shows how easily people can turn on one another given the right situation. I found the book compelling, dramatic, and interesting. I loathe how dictators can totally destroy an entire culture and get people to follow blindly along. This book shows how devastating the Cultural Revolution was....I recommend this book to show what can happen when a strong leader becomes too powerful.

Great book. So inspired by it that I read it to my seventh grade class. They loved it almost as much as I did. Great for someone wanting to see what it was like during Communist China.

The combination of a very likable character caught in a very stressful time made this true story hard to put down. Reading about how Ling navigates the journey from privileged child to outcast provides a deep and personal account of what it is like to live through a political upheaval.

Excellent supplement for all reading levels to our 8th grade China unit.

This book was excellent for placing the reader in revolutionary China. A great read for discussion points dealing with freedom, oppression and understanding the dynamic history of communist China.

Although the text is not up-to-date (e.g., it states on pp. 129-130 that the van der Waerden conjecture on the permanent of stochastic matrices is still unresolved!), most classical results in matrix theory and analysis is presented in an unpretentious style and with due credit to the original contributions. Proofs are given with only a modicum of rigor for the more important and general theorems and some exemples (but not many) are worked out to illustrate the possibilities and limitations of the techniques.On the downside, the book is typeset in a small type that makes it difficult to discern sub-subscripts and superscripts in some expressions. I am not nitpicking here: sometimes you cannot affirm if that index is an "i" or a "t", and if it is an "i_t" or a "t_i" it only gets worse. Given its enduring value, a new printing in a slightly larger font, say, 1pt up, would be a good service to its readership.I prefer this title to the much more expensive (and not that much up-to-date) book by Horn & Johnson. If you cannot afford both, go with Marcus & Minc. I am not rating it 5 stars because of (i) its age, (ii) its annoying typeset (a minor issue, actually), and (iii) the typos, of the confusing kind. Otherwise, for the practicing scientist and engineer and for students looking for a cheap reference, I can only recommend this book.

I got this book very quickly. But I think this book just includes some important theorems. It does not include how to prove them.

This book is not really a review of matrix theory; the focus is on inequalities, mainly for PD matrices, convex functions and eigenvalue problems. The book tries to present a general framework, a-la Hardy, but is not quite as successful. Nevertheless, if you need to find that elusive inequality that you saw in undergraduate, this book will likely contain it. This book should be on every mathematical researcher's shelf.

Each section starts with a set of necessary definitions. Then, theorems are stated without proof---therefore, the it can also be used as an exercise book. One can go to a section of interest and try to prove some of the theorems listed there.

Probably the best book out there for building your own earth-sheltered home, but I felt it was lacking.I understand that the author offers private consulting to clients and runs a building school for earth-sheltered house design and construction, but I get the impression that the book purposely omitted some details for this reason. There were maybe three structural schematics in the book, none of which was complete. I get that the intent was to explain the "How-To" and give all of the intellectual tools necessary to design and build on your own, but I think a larger reference section with at least one complete structural schematic would have been useful.The color pictures were nice. I would have purchased an all-color photo edition of the book if it was offered, as some of the construction photos are hard to make out in black and white.

Let me start by saying this was an excellent book. Well written, to the point, detailed descriptions of what he has done and gives the knowledge to build your own. However, there were a couple things I would have liked more info on. The book could greatly benefit from giving more designs and or blueprints. This is more a guide to teach you how to design your own house rather than instructions on how to build already designed homes. I also feel like it could benefit from a guide section where you simply fill in the numbers you measure to calculate load, etc. It gives you the formulas you need in the apendix, but you will need to know how to do algebra. Having an easy plan/worksheets to assist your build would have been very helpful and cut down on my time (former math tutor) spent calculating my load.

This book is well written and has a lot of nice glossy pictures to go along with the explainations. The book explains all the aspects of how to build an under ground house. Which is a great concept unless you live in California and have to deal with Title 24 of the building codes which make this type of house just about impossible to build here. Nevertheless I would highly suggest this book for any buildiers library for the chapters on foundations, timber framing .and other aspects of building as they can still be applied to an above ground home as well.

The majority of info in this book applies also to houses which are partly subterranean or even above grade. Lots of information about foundations, floors, walls, roof construction and green roofs. Note that the earth sheltered houses in this book are in general not tucked away in a hill side or something. They're integrated in the landscape, in the soil, but there's not a huge earth load on top of them.The calculations in the book are very helpful when considering timber dimensions, roof load and much more. Don't be alarmed: it's only a small part of the book and if you're really not into numbers, just skip these parts.The writer is highly experienced, having build two houses. He shares his findings and faults with you, which is definitely very valuable. You may be put off somewhat by the extensive use of concrete and synthetic insulation, especially when you prefer natural materials, like me. From design, to site prep, foundation, floor, external walls, timber-framing, waterproofing, insulation, drainage, living roofs, exterior finishes, and interior features, it covers it ALL! It even goes into the livability and function of such homes. And as a publication of Mother Earth News, it provides a wealth of resources for sourcing materials needed as well. One book - it's all in here!

I was extremely disappointed in the ebook content and exhibits of how to, who does, etc., is not dealt with or expanded upon effectively. I would like to have my money back for it does not do what it was advertised to illustrate....It does not meet the expectations as advertised.

While the author offer a great deal of information on the subject much of this is useful only from an academic standpoint and not so much from a do it yourself one. I love the ideas this thing has given me but I can't help but feel I'd be getting more out of this if I were already a professional contractor. The author has a habit of bogging the text down with too much technical jargon, this might be great for a text book to a class on the subject now that I think about it.It has given me plenty of practical and useful questions to ask both myself and the professional I'll be hiring for the job. Overall not too shabby but not too great either.

Good advice and good ideas, i prefer Michael Reynolds “earthship” design as he has MUCH MORE design experience than Rob Roy. Still, Rob has good advice.
