This is absolutely the most gorgeous book. I was led to buy Animalium through a Montessori blog for my toddler. At two years old, the book stands at half his length. He seems to do fine with looking through it while seated on the ground, or standing over it while placed on his bed. I don't think that this would be the best book for a toddler that hasn't yet learned how to be gentle with his books, except of course if someone is helping him with it. My son loves getting his toy animals and finding them in the pages of Animalium. I realize that most people wouldn't buy this sort of book for a toddler, but Montessori recommends providing the most beautiful books at as early of an age as you can. My husband is an artist, and his jaw dropped when he saw this book! I may have to buy a second one for him. He was instantly curious as to whether the artist had any other books available. Animalium is an amazing book for any artist looking to reference animals and sea life, or just beautiful color palettes. The artwork has a vintage feel to it. I'd gladly hang any of it in my own home, which makes it nice that posters are also available for purchase! I think this book would be loved by all ages! I don't see how anyone could ever regret purchasing it. Please let me know if this review was helpful to you!

I bought this to read to my kids because of glowing reviews, and it is a very nicely illustrated book indeed, but I found the content annoyingly lacking. On the elephant page, for example, it depicts two types of elephants in the pictures. One of them is the Asian elephant and this is described in the legend at the bottom. The other one (I assume is the African Elephant) is just ignored...no label or description. And while I know that no book short of an animal encyclopedia can list all members of a group, this book is ridiculously lacking in content. The "Cats" page for example, only has TWO cats: a leopard and a lion! This is missing major, significant members of the groups such as tiger, jaguar, etc... The "Bats" section, however, has 5 different types of bats illustrated and discussed. "Hoofed mammals" for example has only 5 animals - rhino, hippo, giraffe, muntjac deer, and gerenuk...yet the turtle page has 6 different types or turtle. There are so many favorite animals missing in here...I don't get it. The organization is strange too.. sometimes there are pictures of full animals, and sometimes there are just skeleton views or lifecycle views. The "Crocodiles and Alligators" page has only one picture of a croc/alligator, - but it is just the skeleton. I'd rather see a real illustration of each and have the differences pointed out.

Presented as classes and arranged in evolutionary order showing the development through the ages, each chapter focuses on several of the species making up that class.Following the introduction or “Entrance”, a two-page illustration shows the Tree of Animal Life. This section provides an overview of the content of “Animalium” and leads into the more specific “Galleries” (chapters) of the text. Each set of two facing pages within the Gallery consists of a page containing a brief discussion and a key to the illustrations shown on the facing page, designated as a plate. The final set of facing pages in each Gallery holds a discussion of the habitat of the animals within the Gallery and an illustration incorporating those specific animals discussed on the preceding pages.The illustrations alone make “Animalium” a volume that anyone who appreciates artwork will want to add to their personal library. Softly colored pictures have the appearance of hand-drawn pen and ink illustrations that were common in naturalists’ journals during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Printed on heavy, ivory or aged ivory-colored pages – the page color was not consistent throughout the book - the entire volume seems to be a vintage book that one might discover in an attic or antique emporium. The inconsistency of page color may have been deliberate. Nevertheless, this does not detract from the overall appeal of the book.The text of “Animalium” is informative, but brief. Each section of the Galleries begins with a short paragraph about the subject of that Gallery. The Latin name follows the more common name of each creature illustrated on the facing page. Information about the animal’s size, and with a few exceptions, a brief paragraph about each creature follows the introductory paragraph.“Animalium” and the information it contains are based on the theory of Evolution; no other theories – Creationism or Evolutionary Creationism – are discussed in the text. Conservative individuals may find this aspect of the book conflicts with their own core beliefs.“Animalium” is a beautiful volume that is suitable for display as a coffee table book – it measures approximately 14 7/8” X 10 7/8” – or as a book for anyone, regardless of age, who is fascinated by the animal kingdom. Five stars!

Bought this as a gift for my animal obsessed son. It's beautiful. It's very information heavy, so he is a bit too young to really appreciate it right now (he's only 7,) but I can tell he will love it in a few years. This is the kind of book you hang onto forever.

This is probably the most beautiful children's book I've ever seen. The illustrations walk the line between vintage textbooks and museum exhibitions, and they are extraordinary. The text is fantastic as well--enough information to be useful, but not so much as to discourage or bore a young reader. I will absolutely be buying this one for gifts in the future.

I love this deck for a reason some might find strange but It is a challage for me. I have been reading tarot for years and years maybe 20 years in all or more. This deck has something new in that the front of the card is much like the Rider Waite version but turn it over and you see the backside of what is happening behind them. So it is like learning a new way of looking at the cards. I love it. Each card has so many things to interpret and that is a wonderful chanllege for an old tarot reader. The art work on the cards is beautiful and the book does a great job explaining how they see it. Some cards they read different than I would and again that too is wonderful to have another look at a old card with a new way of seeing it. Really good deck to work with. Hope they keep this one for years out in the main stream or I am thinking of buying several in case I wear this one out.

I saw a reading given on YouTube using these cards and thought it was a great premise, with pictures front and back, which is why I gave them 2 stars, instead of 1. I also read the great reviews on these cards. So I ordered the kit. I cannot believe that no one, in their review, mentioned how CHEAP and THIN these cards are...not much thicker than paper. Most Tarot cards, when you bend them, they spring back. These cards, when bent, will stay bent. I would not even dare to shuffle them...unless I would WANT them curled. Also, the pictures are not that great...in my opinion. I didn't connect with them at all. These cards are really not worth the money...MY money...so I'm returning them. Sorry to sound so pessimistic, but they were a major disappointment.

A wonderful addition to my ever-growing tarot collection. I highly recommend this deck for any tarot lover, professional reader or beginner. I also highly recommend the kit / book and not just buying the deck alone. A lot of people are misinformed about the deck. It's not just showing the backs of the cards, it's showing the other sides, personalities and perspectives of the characters and situations. Instead of having 78 cards, you really in a sense are working with 156!I was very skeptical about ordering this deck. In a YouTube deck review I watched the artwork on the cards looked odd and cardstock seemed thin. When I got the deck and saw it in person I was very pleased. Very nice artwork and cards shuffle very nicely. They have a very nice gloss finish. The cards are a tad bit thicker than the typical modern tarot cards that are on the market. I LOVE that there are no borders.This deck will take time to get used to, but I really love it. It's honestly become an immediate favorite of mine.

I received this book on the day it released (yesterday) and simply couldn't put it down (well, except when life realities got in the way). Annie is as clever as she is likeable, with a snarky dark side that I just loved. With short chapters that alternately made me giggle and tear up or get wistful, it was the perfect read for my busy, easily interrupted life as a mom. I was impressed by several things. First, I'm blown away by the sheer volume of books she has read and has opinions about- copious and truly diverse. Having not come to pleasure reading until later in life, I found her wide array of knowledge to be inspiring and informative. She made even the most obscure titles sound interesting.Secondly, Annie is just really funny. I can imagine her actually holding these books in her hands and expressing her clever sentiments. Or quietly being snarky with me by the bookshelf at a party. I love the little personal and family details that she weaves into the stories, making the book even more endearing to me.Finally, this book inspired me to read more books. I love books that make me feel this way. I have a very lengthy list of her recommendations and am looking forward to getting started-- with the help of my local library.FYI to potential readers, Annie uses some language, and some less-than-savory themes are discussed... because of humor and because of books. I enjoyed it thoroughly and look forward to reading it again in the future.

LOVED IT! As an ex-librarian I chuckled, laughed out loud, savored the sweet spots (to reread FROG & TOAD now with Annie Spence’s tenderness for them made it all a new experience), made out lists, and ordered several more of this book as gifts. Spence is an uninhibited reviewer who isn’t trying to create the 100 BOOKS YOU MUST READ BEFORE YOU KEEL OVER. This is pure joy. And her view of hobbity creatures still makes me laugh. Spence is a librarian with a robust joy of books that she loves or not. It’s delightful. And yes, I ordered some FROG & TOAD for adults and children. Ms. Spence, they owe you for the uptick in orders of some books because of you in the stacks.

Given how much I love to exchange book recommendations and stories of the books that changed my life, I knew I would enjoy this read. And by the end, it felt like I had met a friend for coffee and spent hours discussing our favorite reads, and some of our not-so-favorite ones, too. I also found a list of new literary friends I need to meet and worlds to get lost in during my reading. And, the author gives to best answer to the question of which author would you invite for dinner, and why. The answer is Anne Frank, "because I would love to watch that bright young woman’s smile grow upon learning that she is an internationally celebrated author." And I am not crying now, YOU are crying.

Loved this book! It is split into two parts, the first consists of breakup / love letters to the books in her life as a librarian, and the second are hilarious book lists that may help you in certain situations, such as how to turn your lover into a reader.
 Regarding the letters - there were books I had not read (Virgin Suicides), and some I added to my TBR because of her letters (as if I needed more to read). She was spot on in some of her reviews (50 shades...) and some I politely disagreed with (I was not that big a fan of The Goldfinch, sorry).
The book lists were my favorite though, and I thought this format was absolutely genius. She starts the lists off with the topic of 'I'd Rather Be Reading', and gives excuses to tell your friends so you can stay home and read, along with a book that pairs with the theme of the excuse. I was dying on a few of them, for example, "I'll be at my high school reunion. Want to be my date?" And then she recommends Home Land by Sam Lipsyte, which is apparently a novel about a guy that has a high school nickname of Teabag. It just keeps going from there.


Honestly, I bought this book because the excerpt amused me. Now I tremble with the thought that I could easily have missed it. It's just like the long, fun conversations I had with my bookstore coworkers all the time. It brought back so many happy memories, and renewed my desire to become a librarian myself. That's always been my dream, and this book perfectly showcases why. Not incidentally, my TBR list has experienced a growth spurt, too.

This book is so great! It's funny, charming, and completely relatable read. I couldn't put it down and couldn't stop laughing while reading it. The author is a great writer, and I really liked this charming little book with a ton of personality and character (I even loved the vulgarity, it made me laugh even more!). It was hilarious. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a great new read, and this book would be perfect for your next book club book!

I love this book. Most of the books that are a subject for her letters I have read or am familiar with, so her "letter" to the book is really meaningful and true. A few I haven't read and have now added to my reading list. I found the tone startling at first but soon settled in and soon found it laugh out loud funny. I haven't laughed that much with a book since the last David Sedaris came out. The best one for a laugh was the Steven King. My co-workers in the break room insisted that I pass the book around after I finished reading the letter to his book. ( each letter is about a page and a half so it's easy for multiple people to read it on a half hour break. ) I will wait impatiently for her next book.

Oh, Annie. This book was a hoot, and I read it right after weeding my own bookshelves and having reassuring talks with the books going into storage until more bookshelves materialize. For me, your book did everything you wanted it to - I laughed, I added titles to my TBR list, and remembered book relationships good and bad. Nicely done!
