I am a technical writer and editor with eight years of experience, and I regret that I did not read this book when I first started my career. When people ask me about getting started in technical documentation, I recommend this book to them. The main sections of the book provide guidelines on writing documentation that is easy to use, easy to understand, and easy to find. The book definitely follows these concepts, which helps when I reference it for developing content, editing content, or determining the best style guidelines for the documentation teams that I work with.This book has been so invaluable that I have a paperback at home, a paperback in the office, and a Kindle edition that I can reference from my mobile devices. It is full of so much useful information, I reread sections periodically to refresh myself on the guidelines in that section. Whether you are new or experienced in technical documentation, I highly recommend this book to you.

This is a great technical writing book for both new and mid-career tech writers. The information is well-organized in such a way that it can be used as a great reference book. There are many helpful diagrams and checklists in the book, and I have appreciated them immensely.

I am a neophyte technical writer, but experienced in grammar and composition. Having only read the first few chapters, I have already learned several theoretical and practical points that I have been able to apply. This is my first book on the subject, so I can't say it's the best, but I can highly recommend it. I would buy this book again.

I purchased this series directly from "The Great Courses" and paid a loy more for it..........BUT......it is a worthwhile set of lectures for those how want a "Clearer Picture" of Chinathen what passes as news about China from trolls on the Internet and "Slightly learning" national wide newspapers who place their biased opinions mixed-in with their news articles and not on an "Editorial Page" where they belong.

I've listened to probably three hundred or so audiobooks, mostly fiction (I write science fiction and fantasy). The author/lecturer of The Fall and Rise of China not only puts the entire course in very understandable terms, but he tells the story of modern china in a masterful, entertaining way. Well done!

One of the best courses from the Teaching Company I have ever taken. Well written, interesting and presented excellently by Professor Baum. He gives a fair assessment of the turmoil that has been China and the amazing rise from Civil Was and the horrible Communist takeover under Mao. It was a fascinating look at this new world power and the many struggles yet to come. I highly recommend it !

Excellent course; like a novel!

Richard Baum's witty and erudite overview of Chinese history from the Opium Wars to China's recent emergence as a global powerhouse - is both masterful and entertaining. The series - 48 half-hour lectures - gives Baum plenty of time to discuss all major developments in minute detail; indeed, fully 75% of his time is lavished on events that occurred after the Communist takeover in 1949. Baum's approach is objective and his conclusions nuanced and persuasive, but he also spices his scholarly explanations with amusing personal anecdotes. The Teaching Company has produced many excellent lecture series, but this is one of their best.

The lecture series works on almost all the counts perfectly: the topic is extremely important and relatively uncovered. The views are largely unbiased even if one disagrees with many of the conclusions. The style is completely engaging with the professor mixing the landmark historical events with personal anecdotes or interesting normal life incidents to create a sense of a grand, purposeful story rumbling towards a rousing climax. And most importantly, the details are rich, illuminating and still undaunting and easy to understand.To start with, the book starts exactly at a point that is so logical but rarely utilized. The relevancy enhanced by skipping the millennia of empires, scholars and apparently exotic lifestyle comes in handy throughout the book. Professor Baum present this history as that of another human society in all its achievements, ambitions, injustices and mistakes.All the larger than life, history-shaping politicians are shown as real life, real time humans - ambitious, at times idealistic, at times narcissistic, vain, insecure, ill-informed and taking decisions without remotely being aware of the implications. The last point on the implications is particularly important as it is often lost to many of us later day observers that there is little inevitability or even significance when most events that are later seen as monumental begin. Professor Baum somehow finds enough time to describe tens of otherwise lesser known Chinese politicians who shaped the world history more than hundreds popularly known to the readers of contemporary western history.The decription of the events is breath-taking, even more than the sheer scope. From the opium wars to the last days of the royalty, the Taiping and Boxer rebellions, the rise of the nationalists, the ins and the outs of Sun Yat Sen, the common origins and the crazy split of Kuomintang and the Communists, the rise from obscurity of Mao and the fall to the obscurity (in the Chinese context at least) of Chiang Kai Shek, the Japanese invasion and implications, the Korean war, the Cultural revolution, the Great Leap, the purges of many politicians, the gang of four, the mostly uncertain and (at least then-appearing) unspectacular rise and era of Deng etc etcThere is so much to learn from this series that somehow is not just relevant but enormously interesting.

The paper worked well with gel pens but my watercolor brush pens made the paper crinkle a little bit. There were no page perforations and I'm bneginning to consider that a must have for a coloing book.I like some of the designs but others had too many very small spaces and lots of black lining that made them hard to color.

My 14 year old loves this coloring book. My 18 year old step daughter found this book to her liking as well.
