Plunkitt of Tammany Hall: A Series of Very Plain Talks on Very Practical Politics (Signet Classics)

About the Author

George Washington Plunkitt was born into poverty in New York in 1842. He had only three years of formal schooling, but this lack did not hinder him from becoming one of the most powerful men in New York City politics. He died in 1924, a renowned civic leader and a millionaire. William L. Riordan, a newspaperman for the New York Evening Post, interviewed George Washington Plunkitt and preserved his philosophy for posterity. He recognized in Plunkitt an exceptional frankness that set him apart from his fellow political bosses. In Plunkitt of Tammany Hall Riordan admits readers into an area of life that mystified middle-class Americans at the turn of the twentieth century. Peter Quinn is a former speechwriter for Mario Cuomo and the author of Banished Children of Eve: A Novel of Civil War New York.

There is a long tradition of American politicians using their offices to barter power and influence and to enrich themselves. I know what you’re thinking—I am about to launch into a tirade about Donald Trump. No, actually, he is by no means the most famous such politician. He isn’t the most famous such New York politician. For who can possibly beat Tammany Hall?Tammany Hall is shorthand for the political machine that controlled New York democratic politics for 150 years. Ed Koch is the man most often credited with ending their mafia-like reign in 1960. You have probably heard of how Tammany Hall stole elections, intimidated political antagonists and shook down businessmen. You have probably read about the Boss Tweed’s antipathy to African-Americans, Hispanics and Jews. (Indeed, it is this antipathy that may at least partially explain Trump’s own discrimination against those same groups—he was a New York contractor after all.)But Tammany Hall survived for as long as it did not because it hated people but because it provided for them. If you gave Tammany your vote, you could count on social services and a job at a time when the poor had no services and there was no unemployment insurance or a safety net. Tammany Hall provided that safety net in exchange for your vote. And in a series of frank and disarmingly charming, informal lectures of sorts, Plunkitt revels in this corruption. Plunkitt may or may not be book-educated (in any event, he takes a dim view of people who are) but he does understand people very well. He understands that when you ostentatiously help someone when they’re in a poor way indeed they will remember you at the polls. That (he explains) is why it’s so important to chase fire engines and ambulances. And it’s important to be there when people celebrate life events: from weddings to funerals. That too will get you a vote. And sure, Plunkitt made money off the deal and he provided jobs for his friends (why would he provide jobs for people who were political ingrates?). But as he saw it, there was nothing wrong with that. After all, his business was politics and, since people depended on him doing well in his business (and he did; he did quite well) and people rely on him doing well for their livelihoods, the people’s interests and his interests coincide. What is wrong with that, he repeatedly asks in his disarming and funny way?The fact that Tammany Hall lasted for 150 years and that we have now elected Trump (who asks that exact same question often in exact same words Plunkitt uses) indicates that we have yet to come up with a good answer to that question. Are you OK with political corruption if you get something out of it too?

Forget about political theory, right- or left-wing approaches, grandiose philosophies, demographics, and so on.If you want to know how to get yourself elected to public office, maintain that office, get re-elected, and expand your power base, "Plunkitt of Tammany Hall" is THE book to read. Regardless of the century.Mr. Plunkitt was a Tammany politician, State Senator, and holder of a number of critical posts in the Tammany organization during the late 19th century. He grew rich on deals, brokered issues, and was a walking example of an organization (machine) politician of the day. He gave a bunch of speeches from his rostrum, the New York County bootblack stand, on how Tammany and politicians should and did operate, and everything he says (except maybe about excise and "blockades on the elevated roads") is still true today. He told his Boswell, a reporter named William Riordan, the following:Study human nature and act accordingly.Reach out to all elements in your district. You cannot succeed simply through degrees and book-learning -- you have to understand people. The most important commodity in politics is being able to deliver votes for the organization. The more you can command, the better.Reciprocity is critical in patronage.Do not violate the penal code -- that's how organization politicians get in trouble.See your opportunities and take them.Do not wear a dress suit when dealing with residents in the district.Provide services for your constituents or outlets for their abilities.Display patriotism at all times."Reformers are only morning glories."Support the organization at all times.Ensure that your supporters turn out to vote.Everything that Senator Plunkitt said in 1886 is still absolutely true today. If you want to understand politics in America, or make a career of it, read this book, cover to cover, front to back, keep it on your desk, refer to it, read it again, and do what it tells you.

This is not to review the work "Plunkitt Of Tammany Hall" by William L. Riordon, but this particular edition.First of all, this work has no editor or publisher listed, which is very strange. It has (very) numerous typos and stylistic errors (e.g. four instances where a line or two was continued unnecessarily on to a new page). But most disturbing of all (besides the fact that an "author/editor" - not Riordon - is listed above in the Amazon listing, but nowhere in the book) is that at the very end of the book, on the last page facing the inside cover, is a barcode, and the following: "Made In The USA; Lexington, KY; 13 April 2012." Mind you: I *ORDERED* this book late on 12 April 2012. You may imagine my total confusion at this point.Did they receive my order and print this book the next day?I was dubious at first, but I'm beginning to think they did!For $5.99, next time I'll order ten! They should just READ the text before they print it, for goodness sake. Periods and commas are easy things to get right!

Awesome book with an insider's prospective on machine politics. It reads like a series of how-to essays that let you know what it takes to be a political boss. Of course most of the stuff in the book is now illegal. As a bonus, it is very short and quick to read. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in history, politics, or local government.

A Tammeny Hall ward boss of a bygone era speaks with a bluntness that people crave in politicians today. He is open about his involvement in what he calls "honest graft," in contrast to the high-sounding but even more corrupt politicians of today. His words also have a subtle humor and cleverness that make this book entertaining as well as informative.

The Algal Bowl: Overfertilization of the World's Freshwaters and Estuaries, by David W. Schindler

Review

"Schindler and Vallentyne describe in minute detail how and why this 'cultural' eutrophication, or human-caused plant-food glut, has come to be, giving a satisfying nod to the scientists who began working on the phenomenon during the last century. There is a lucid examination of several bodies of water that are slimed with algae and some attempts at recovery, as well as a beautiful description of several lakes where these authors and other ecologists have performed whole-lake experiments to understand better how the whole works. It is impeccable empirical science, written with vigour and precision. Among its other charms, this is an excellent textbook. But this is a cloak of many colours. The Algal Bowl is also a work of scientific poetry.. Even more compelling, though, is the book's touching show of faith in Homo sapiens and our ability to face up to the disastrous changes we have wrought to the Earth's capacity to support life. The final chapter puts the issue of lake eutrophication into the larger puzzle of planetary change and avers that if we can tackle this piece, we can tackle the whole thing. It is a prescription for hope. It is touching because few planetary diagnosticians know the full state of the illness better than Schindler. He may be a world expert on lakes and their algal colonies, but he is also one of the world's experts on how the planet works as a whole. From the lake system to the planetary system is not such a big leap for someone of Schindler's intellect.. And when Schindler tells us, as he does in the penultimate paragraph of this book that the time to begin considering the social changes necessary to protect freshwater is 'NOW' (his emphasis), I think we had better listen." Alanna Mitchell, Literary Review of Canada, September 2008"The first Algal Bowl was a classic and really was influential for both the study of lakes and for people who appreciated the environment, especially the eutrophication of lakes. David Schindler is the ideal co-author for a new edition." Daniel Conley, University of Lund, Sweden"The previous edition was a milestone in its time. Both authors are outstanding and well-known. I believe that there is a worldwide need for this book." Martin Dokulil, Institute for Limnology, Austria"Environmental science gets a boost with The Algal Bowl; a study by two of the world's leading water scientists of the importance of protecting Earth's water systems from massive algae blooms." Edmonton Journal, Christmas Gift Guide, November 19, 2008Bookmark - http://bookmarkckua.blogspot.com"The Algal Bowl is by no means a page-turner. Nor was it intended to be. But it should be required reading for every politician, civil servant, farmer, fisherman, hunter, paddler and cottage owner who has any stake in the management of freshwater in western North America. Like the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, the Algal Bowl has the potential to disrupt ecosystems, displace human populations and cause tremendous economic hardship. Those who doubt that possibility need only look at several populous Third World countries where potable freshwater is now a thing of the past." Ed Struzik, Edmonton Journal, April 5, 2009"David Schindler, the University of Alberta biology professor and champion of environmental causes, will be given a prestigious award for his efforts to help the Canadian public and the world better understand science....Schindler was chosen for the award because he is, said Roy Pearson, president of the institute, 'a scientist who is able to bridge the gap between the lab and people.' Throughout his career Schindler has worked tirelessly to break new ground as a researcher on two subjects close to his heart: fresh water and the boreal forest. His credentials in the field and laboratory are matched by his status as an eloquent translator of complicated science. Schindler is seen as a leading communicator of environmental science, but he's a little surprised he's getting this award. Past winners include David Suzuki and Nobel Prize winner John Polyani.... To Schindler, being a conduit to the world of science is a welcomed and required part of the job. 'The public supports all the luxurious things that university researchers do so certainly the public has a right to know the relevance of research that can affect their lives.'" Brian Murphy, ExpressNews, May 6, 2009 (Full article at: http://www.expressnews.ualberta.ca/article.cfm?id=10162)"Anyone who loves a freshwater lake has probably watched it become less pristine due to human activity. Scum-covered rocks, weeds and dirty water are all symptoms of why authors Schindler and Vallentyne have re-sounded the alarm first given in the early seventies about the degradation of our lakes due to over-fertilization, erosion and run-off. With a concise and thorough approach, they explain how this problem affects us locally and globally, and how it is a logical first step in facing the world's many environmental challenges. This book proves we have the knowledge and tools; civilization just needs the will to do the right thing. If not, we'll end up with something akin to the Dust Bowl of the American Plains in the thirties -- giant bowls of green algae instead of clear and healthy freshwater lakes.""Vallentyne, who passed away during Schindler's revision of the book, originally wrote it to highlight humanity's 'cavalier treatment of lakes.' He predicted that by 2000 the degradation of lakes would be akin to the destruction of soil quality during the Great Depression. Much of what Vallentyne predicted has come true. As such, The Algal Bowl places a premium on communicating scientific information to a broad audience.... an excellent crash course in the politics and ecology of lakes." Jay Smith, Alberta Views, September 2009"This work, an updated version of Vallentyne's The Algal Bowl: Lakes and Man (1974), allows readers not only to discover an early environmental classic, but also to learn which of the book's suppositions have come to pass over the intervening 35 years. The title alludes to the Dust Bowl (a US terrestrial disaster caused by mismanaged western agriculture in the 1930s) for the parallel aquatic disaster of human-induced eutrophication in North American water bodies. Ironically, the book portrays the shift in eutrophication from east to west in the past three decades, and the successes and failures in protecting our waters in a variety of circumstances....This book is written for and valuable to lay readers, policy enthusiasts, wetlands professionals, and professors and their undergraduate students interested in environmental consequences and actions. Highly recommended." C.W. Schneider, Trinity College, CHOICE Magazine, September 2009

I bought this book to use as a source for a college paper on global issues related to eutrophication and human contribution. This book contained excellent, detailed information on everything from the history, to the chemistry, to notable studies done by researchers, and even lots of suggestions on what can be done to slow or stop eutrophication. This book was extremely helpful to me for my paper, and I'm happy to add this book to my academic library for future use. :)

This book is scientifically accurate with an accessible writing style. It gives a clear explanation of the chemistry of freshwater eutrophication AND a broad perspective on how? and why? it occurs. (Cultural factors, folks.)No matter your level of knowledge this book is certain to provide new insight into the science, as well as, a historical perspective on how we've made much of our freshwater resources (lakes) into algal bowls.

Throughout this book I squirmed, not in a good way. I put this book down several times just so I could step away to let some clean air refresh me. But I always came back, determined to finish. I love this author. Love her style. I’ve read BDSM before but this book for some reason left me feeling so uncomfortable until the last couple of chapters where I started to have a glimmer of sun. Then came the Epilogue and the squirming and uncomfortableness returned.Audrey is the main character, divorced and mother of two sons, 12 and 9 years. The object of her devotion is Gavin, owner of a BDSM club. I didn’t really like them. I didn’t connect with them. But I was fascinated, captivated, and obsessed with them. Any book that has me not caring for an MC but mesmerizes the heck out of me earns 5 stars. Oh one more thing, I want a sequel. Go figure.

In A.R. Hadley’s latest story, her first standalone, she takes us on a journey down the rabbithole. Audrey is a 30-something divorcée. She could be your neighbor or friend, that woman wandering through the grocery store managing her list and kids with a far-off look in her eye. That look, we come to know, is an abiding curiosity in BDSM. She doesn’t just want to try it, she needs to. It’s an itch that nothing else in her life can scratch. Then she meets Gavin, a dungeon owner and Dom who wants to be her Master. He’s a provocateur and strangely religious man who mingles scripture and sex. A perfect metaphor for the struggle Audrey herself is facing—how to intertwine two seemingly disparate things into one fulfilling life. But this passage into enlightenment doesn’t come without cost. And I won’t say whether Audrey and Gavin can create space in their lives for each other. But this is what A.R. Hadley does, coolly invites you in, provokes you, then makes it difficult to leave…just like the dungeon in this story.

It has been a long time since I read an erotic BDSM novel, but I really enjoy A.R. Hadley's lyrical prose and just had to read Bodhi. Bodhi explores the relationship a woman has with her children, her public life, and the relationship she shares with her Dominant, her private life. She struggles to accept that she can be both a loving mother and a masochist, that she can love without strings, and that her beliefs of religious and society's expectations shouldn't keep her from her desire for pain. Audrey, a recent divorcee, has always wanted more in the bedroom, but struggled to express those desires to her now ex-husband. Bodhi, a dungeon in Tampa, and a new friend, Kate, present her the opportunity to learn more about herself and the world of BDSM.Bodhi is a story of self discovery, with Audrey learning to accept her desires and to obey her new Master, Gavin. Gavin, however, has some self discovery to do as well and as their emotions begin to grow during their play he must choose to share or walk away. He does not know how to live away from the sexual world and Audrey, with one foot in the dungeon and one foot outside, soon falls for him and wants for normalcy, even hand holding, between them. While Bodhi is incredibly erotic, with nearly all of Gavin and Audrey's interactions taking place in the dungeon, it is also a story about religion, wrong and right, love and loss. Gavin has very strong beliefs and oftentimes he recites scripture during their vicious lovemaking. The scriptures have meaning for Gavin and Audrey struggles to connect the sadist with the God-fearing believer. As things heat up between them it is apparent that it will be impossible for both to keep their private lives separate from their arrangement and as they reveal the most private parts of themselves it is a difficult lesson in trust and love and life for both of them.I did not expect Bodhi at all, it completely blew me away. I actually really enjoyed Audrey and Gavin, their romance, their struggles, it all felt very real. They do come together very quickly and break many of the BDSM and dungeon rules along the way, but hey, fiction allows for that and it makes the book better. However, as A.R. Hadley did predict she might find of some reviewers, the religious nature of the novel is difficult for me to connect to the BDSM world. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm completely accepting of both, but Bodhi is the first read for me with both playing equal parts. I found myself having to think quite a bit with this read and, like I love of all her work, it was incredibly heavy. I think if I were to read this novel at another time, more with more time to stew on it, it might rate even higher for me.Society has us believing that things they deem "not normal" are wrong and somehow immoral, Bodhi takes several of those beliefs and turns them upside down. Audrey and Gavin love openly, however they also love differently, with bruises and burns and marks that Audrey must hide when she leaves the dungeon's walls. I really enjoyed A.R. Hadley's views on the BDSM world, she writes characters with such skill and the introspective thoughts they have are presented in such a detailed way that you begin to feel as though you are having a philosophical discussion with the novel. I swooned for Gavin just as Audrey did, I hurt for her when she hurt, and I felt every emotion alongside them as they stumbled through a new journey together. Bodhi is incredibly unique, in my opinion, in the erotica genre and I do recommend it to fellow open minded readers.ARC provided.

I like dark books and I love BDSM so I thought I would really love this book. But I only just give it four stars because I am very conflicted. On the one hand, it was very hot, but on the other hand it was somewhat icky. Audrey is a divorced mother who feels that there is something missing in her life. She loved her husband but felt that their sexual relationship was not enough for her. She visits a BDSM club with her new friend Kate and encounters Gavin, the extremely Dominant owner of the club. Gavin becomes almost an addiction for Audrey. She continues going back for more from Gavin, more intense BDSM scenes, more sex, but eventually she wants more from Gavin. She wants to know more about him personally. As Audrey learns more about him, she learns more about herself. While most of the BDSM scenes were hot, some were just too much for me. The book kept me reading but the religious references and rituals were not only offensive, they were confusing. I also did not understand Audrey's relationship with Kate and the FF scenes did not really seem to follow naturally from the storyline. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

They say, don't judge a book by its cover. Good tip for this one, because the cover promises this is a book about "Why we buy" and "the science of shopping" and that it has information about online shopping as well. The reality? This is more like "Feng Shui for Retail Stores" with basically all of the book being anecdotes about shops that had inappropriate arrangements of merchandise that kept people from buying as much as they might have. The lone chapter about the internet is a joke -- it's basically just the author complaining that he doesn't understand why anyone shops online, and offering a couple of very specific suggestions for how sites like Amazon and Apple Store can improve. No help at all if you are running anything but a physical retail shopping business.

The first four parts of this book are absolutely fascinating. It's an in depth look at the psychology of shopping and it is exactly what the title promises. Underhill's company gets paid to spy on people in stores and see what they're doing wrong and right. The gems in this book are the anecdotes and the specific revelations about how any obstacle you put in the way of a shopper drops your sales figures. Any way you can make life easier raises your sales. This all seems sort of obvious, but most people running the businesses don't think it through. One example is the entry zone at the front of the store - you'd think that's a prime location for signage, deals, brochures, etc. But when you're headed through the door into the store you see almost nothing and stop for almost nothing, and then (in America) you tend to drift to the right and then you're 'in' the store. If you put a store directory just inside the door, nobody uses it. Move it back a bit so you can find it once you're into the store and suddenly it's heavily utilized. He has hard observational data for all these, so they're compelling in addition to being fascinating. And of course all the bad examples are great fun to read (seniors crawling along floors trying to read labels on badly shelved medicine), as are the descriptions of how different groups shop (male vs female, old vs young, parents vs. single, etc.) The whole book is pretty much a commercial for Underhill's company, but it's still informative and fun reading.Where the book falls down is at the end, where a chapter on the Internet is shoehorned in and a perfunctory shout out to each of Envirosell's worldwide branches is included.Even though I think he's more right than wrong, the whole Internet chapter comes across as a confused old guy muttering about how he doesn't get that new fangled rock music. He complains about how many review sites there are, for instance, and has no idea how much it can transform the shopping experience (and not just be a poor supplement). Worse, the book's entire premise is mostly about how you need observational data of real customers because they'll always do things you don't expect (can't argue there), but he HAS no data on this topic, so it's just not compelling. I can't help but think the whole chapter is just in there because 'we need something about teh intertubes'.The 'Come Fly With Me' chapter must be in here because he needs to professionally backscratch all his international partners. It's pretty much useless and turns a mild commercial into an infomercial. If I sound too negative, please don't take it that way - I'm just trying to tell you why this isn't a five star book. You have 220 pages of 'awesome and can't put it down' book followed by 40 pages of 'what the hell am I doing reading this' slog, then another 30 pages of fairly decent reading. If you don't read those two chapters, it's a five star book!

In Paco Underhill’s informative text, Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping, he explores some of the numerous factors that cause consumers to purchase a good or service or deter them from making an acquisition. Through detailing way sin which stores craftily set consumers up to buy as ways in which they may inadvertently be driving shoppers away, Paco Underhill writes to both retailers and consumers. Explaining the value of the science of shopping to those on the business end of purchases and making consumers aware of ways in which stores and companies target them are his objectives for writing this book. Unconventional ideas that he shares, some he openly admits to varying greatly from that of his peers, combined with proof and examples from his time working in the industry of analyzing consumers allows Why we Buy: The Science of Shopping to be a page turning informative text with shocking insight about scenes that we see every day and rarely think twice about. It is rare for me to flip through a three-hundred page book in the span of two days, but I was very interested in Underhill’s style of writing as well as how affected I have been by some of the methods he mentions as a consumer. This text goes beyond textbook information and uses workplace examples of those who track shopping habits as a living to explain the prominence of this “science” in the modern era.The first point that is brought up for evaluation is the importance of understanding customer behavior in a given store and adjusting it accordingly. Paco Underhill gives multiple examples of ways in which he has increased stores sales by 20% or higher through moving displays, changing signs and other small corrections. Validating these points, it is explained that customers may not enter a department from an anticipated angle and displays should accommodate the most common entry into a section. I found the idea of personal space as an issue to be very interesting and did not expect customers being bumped once to deter them from an entire section of a store. Furthermore, it is interesting how much goes into planning the layout of a store and that simply moving a rack out of a high traffic area can be extremely effective in boosting its sales.Another reoccurring point that is brought up is the changing dynamic of customers and of shopping in general. Previous to reading Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping, I had not given much, or any, thought to why certain products were placed at designated shelf heights or that stores would have to change in the not so distant future to accommodate the large, rising market of elderly baby boomers. Underhill refers to the video tapes he studies for various stores throughout his text and utilizes one of an elderly woman unable to reach the dog treats that she wants and of the child who shares a similar problem. This ties into the section in which senses were emphasized as extremely important to the facilitation of sales. After walking past countless mirrors in Macy’s and other retail stores enticing me to try on necklaces and picture how I would look walking around with various handbags on my shoulder, it never occurred to me that this was exactly the store’s intention. Being able to touch items, see them up close and for some products even smell them increases the chance that they will buy something. The examination of comfort and ease of shopping was a fascinating section of this book, and has made me a more aware shopper. Signs being broken up for easy comprehension, space between clothing sections and clear packaging have all stood out to me recently and realize that they are influential in the shopping process. Moreover, I was interested in the differences that are described between men and women in their shopping habits. Men asserting a sense of pride and not asking for help while women will not hesitate a help desk create a stark contrast. Underhill uses this to highlight how different groups have to be marketed to in different ways and that two people can go through the same store and have entirely different experiences. Overall, Paco Underhill is extremely successful in validating the claims that he makes as he backs them up with real examples as well as results. Every assertion that he makes is followed up by some recorded instance in a real store that he has worked with and is followed up with the solution and result of the solution on the store’s profit. Even bringing attention to some everyday observations and supporting them with logic were effective ways of conveying his ideas. For example, to explain how the placement of goods in supermarkets can affect sales, Underhill brought attention to the fact that all supermarkets put milk in the back because it is one of the most commonly purchased goods and this causes customers to go through the entire store before finding what they came for, and hopefully they’ll purchase something else. The only part of this book that I did not find interesting or helpful were the concluding chapters. It felt like he ran out of ideas, but felt the need to fill more pages due to the fact that the beginning of the book was filled with valuable information. A few pages were largely dedicated to the plane industry and the world cup with very little information about marketing. But, the preceding chapters would cause any reader to think back to a time when they perhaps have fallen victim to one of the marketing schemes that apparently most stores utilize. Many sections I just found to be shocking and was even provoked to reread. Who would have thought that there would be a drastic difference in the percentage of women who will purchase jeans that they bring into a fitting room versus men would be 65% to 25%? (Underhill 10). After reading Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping, I feel as though I have gone through countless stores and have witnessed and made too many purchases to have never noticed the consumer behavior that I am surrounded by. This text is eye opening and a bit concerning as it makes you realize how much you haven’t noticed about the world around you. Paco Underhill is extremely effective in conveying to readers the ways in which businesses encourage shopping and how important certain overlooked aspects are. Emphasizing comfort and ease of shopping, product placement and predicting customer’s actions are all focal points of Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping. I would recommend it to anyone, even someone with no interest in marketing or shopping, simply to make oneself more aware as a consumer. Particularly, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys walking around the mall, like myself, because it was fun to make self-realizations and understanding why I make some purchases while simultaneously gaining insight about retail marketing.

I recently saw this suggested by some retail consultants so thought I would give it a try. If you have a store or are planning to open one there are some interesting points that could help you make the design and layout of your store more customer friendly. The internet chapter is a little thin and felt like it was written in a hurry without much data, it does pose some interesting questions but much of it is already out of date. I hope that as shopping moves more online they will have the kind of data from online shoppers that they have on brick and mortar.I am unsure what the purpose of the chapters about his global offices is.
