Adopted for Life: The Priority of Adoption for Christian Families and Churches (Updated and Expanded Edition)

Review

“Russell Moore has given the church a God-centered, gospel-saturated, culturally-sensitive, mission-focused, desperately needed exploration of the priority and privilege of adoption. Readers will find themselves laughing on one page, crying on the next, and ultimately bowing before God thanking him for adopting them into his heavenly family and considering how to show his love to the fatherless on earth.”―David Platt, Pastor-Teacher, McLean Bible Church; author, Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream“Adopted for Life is one of the most compelling books I have ever read―both deeply touching and richly theological. You will never look at adoption or the gospel in quite the same way after reading this book. How could the church have been missing this for so long?”―R. Albert Mohler Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary“Personal, practical, and rich in theology, this book is a ‘must-read’ for anyone interested in adoption. Dr. Moore reveals the love of God through the redemptive beauty of adoption. Whether your interest is personal or church related, this book is for you.”―Kelly Rosati, Vice President for Community Outreach, Focus on the Family“Anyone who has adopted, who is considering adoption, or who has been adopted should read Adopted for Life. And anyone who wants to a get a glimpse of the greatness of the Father’s love for him or her should read it as well.”―Thom S. Rainer, President and CEO, LifeWay Christian Resources“This book is for all who have been adopted by God. Moore illumines the beauty and wonder of our adoption in Christ and its profound implications for orphan care. If you want to deepen your worship of the God who adopts, Adopted for Life will serve you exceptionally well.”―Dan Cruver, Director, Together for Adoption; author, Reclaiming Adoption: Missional Living Through the Rediscovery of Abba Father“This book offers both practical advice and courage to every couple considering adoption. For all readers, it shows how the act of adoption actually reveals core truths about the gospel of Christ.”―Allan C. Carlson, President, The Howard Center for Family, Religion, & Society; Founder and International Secretary, the World Congress of Families; Distinguished Visiting Professor of History, Hillsdale College“Dr. Moore draws on his family’s own experience with adoption to help others understand that by adopting orphaned children we can grow in love of God and neighbor and come to appreciate more deeply our own adoption into the family of God.”―Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions, Princeton University“Russell Moore has done the church a tremendous service by reminding us of the call of God to meet the ever pressing needs of these little ones. Read with the intent to obey.”―Johnny Hunt, Former President, The Southern Baptist Convention; Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church Woodstock, Woodstock, Georgia“I know of no other book so biblically rich, so very practical, and so authentic and heart-felt about the beautiful gift of adoption as this one. It’s a powerfully insightful book of how adoption is a beautiful act of love and mission for the gospel. I pray that God uses it to encourage and impact many, many lives.”―Dan Kimball, Pastor, Vintage Faith Church; author, They Like Jesus but Not the Church“Russell Moore has out of personal experience and with biblical accuracy produced in this work an understanding of God’s purposes in adoption and its connection with gospel compassion. Every pastor should consider the responsibility he has in making adoption a priority for the church as a viable representation of the gospel doctrine of adoption.”―John MacArthur, Pastor, Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, California; President, The Master’s University and Seminary“Russell Moore invites readers to learn to think of adoption in the light of Christian faith. This is a book not only for those who have adopted, those who may adopt, or those who have been adopted, but for all who know themselves to have been freely adopted by God’s grace.”―Gilbert Meilaender, Duesenberg Professor in Christian Ethics, Valparaiso University“Adopted for Life is a well-written rooting of adoption in biblical theology. Moore shows how churches should view adoption as part of their mission and the difference it would make if Christians were known as the people who take in orphans and make them sons and daughters.”―Marvin Olasky, Editor in Chief, WORLD Magazine“The care and honesty Russell Moore demonstrates throughout Adopted for Life should inspire every believer to consider God’s heart for children without a family. Just like a parable of Christ, adoption provides a lost world the powerful picture of God’s personal love for his children. The church must take the lead in caring for orphans and at-risk children, so that adoption is once again united with the gospel.”―Mark A. Tatlock, Provost and Senior Vice President, The Master's College“God is working to bring revival and revolution to his church through orphan ministry, and this book is a must for those who will receive his invitation to consider a fatherless child or simply love them through missions.”―Paul Pennington, Executive Director, Hope for Orphans“Russell Moore’s life has validated every word he has written. In this book he speaks from his heart, mind, and life to ours about the possibility of incarnating adoption as a fleshed out reality in the world of our own families.”―Michael Card, musician; Bible teacher; author, A Better Freedom“Russell Moore challenges Christians to an aspect of Christ’s lordship that many have never considered. His remarkable way of putting our salvation into the context of being adopted into God’s family brings a new perspective on being the recipient of undeserved mercy and grace.”―Jerry Rankin, Former President, International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention“James offers this injunction to the early church: ‘Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world’ (James 1:27 KJV). Russell Moore offers a compelling account of these and other lessons of Scripture so that our communities of faith may put them into practice and become more like that ‘shining city on a hill.’”―Francis J. Beckwith, Professor of Philosophy and Church-State Studies, Baylor University; author, Defending Life: A Moral and Legal Case Against Abortion Choice

There are three things in particular that make this book a stand out among books on adoption.1. It is theological but not is a dry sort of way. Moore writes about the theological doctrine of adoption, but he does so in a way that makes you want to adopt a child right away in order to demonstrate and exult in the gospel!2. It is pastoral but not in a sappy sort of way. Moore writes from a very pastoral heart. This is helpful, because as a Christian considering adoption, I came to the book with a multitude of questions. I had questions on everything from the theology, to the practice, to the nitty gritty details, and Moore addressed nearly all of them. He seemed to be quite sensitive to the fact that he was writing for a broad audience, not just prospective adopters. There is something here for everyone, regardless of whether you think you will ever adopt. It is also true that most questions about adoption are rooted deep in our sense of our own identity and how we think about the world and about God. I know that is true because Moore wrote about it so sensitively and pastorally, and I know myself better as a result of reading the book.3. It is well written. Moore is a very skilled, poignant writer. This is the first book I've read in a good while that I stayed up late reading because I didn't want to stop. He not only explains adoption, he makes you want to adopt.

This is a book I never thought I'd read. Now I can't imagine how a book exactly like it wasn't published long before 2009! In his first chapter Moore explains why you ought to read the book, even (and especially) if you don't want to... and I'm ashamed to admit that this probably described me.There are plenty of "how-to" books regarding adoption. There are plenty of books describing the great need for adoptive families felt by orphans all over the world. There are plenty of books examining the theological doctrine of spiritual adoption. This, to the best of my knowledge, is the only book that combines these three in a manner that shows how these issues absolutely cannot be separated.Russell Moore is a professor at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, but he writes this book as both an adoptive father and an adopted son of our Heavenly Father. His book argues that the Bible does not draw any lines between theological adoption and practical adoption, so Christians should not, either. The Bible tells us over and over what it means to be adopted into the family of God, as sons of the Father and co-heirs with Christ. It also tells us that pure & undefiled religion requires the care and rescue of orphans, just as Christ did not leave us as orphans.Moore does not assert that all Christian families are called or equipped to adopt, but he DOES assert that EVERY Christian has a responsibility to be involved in adoption, whether through becoming adoptive parents, helping others to adopt, or working to create and/or support an adoption ministry in the local church. After reading this book, I am 100% convinced that this is absolutely true. After your Bible, I don't know that there is a more important book that I could commend to you than this one.

Russell Moore Is the president of the ethics and religious liberties council for the southern baptist convention. In my opinion, He's one of the most level headed and loving teachers of the Christian church's stance on social issues. This book transformed my view of adoption. He illustrates his message with personal anecdotes throughout and backs up his thoughts with lots of scripture and Jesus' teaching.I've bought this book for about 10 friends and I Highly recommend this book for anyone considering adoption, who has adopted/been adopted, or just interested in the Bible's teaching on adoption.

This is a heartfelt and very Scripturally-based message to people who are pondering adoption or who are in some way involved in the adoption process, directly or distantly. This was a recommended book from friends who had gone through two adoptions as a way to gauge whether or not this would be an appropriate path to take. It is a bit long, but it's not a difficult read.

There is no other author that has more completely compelled me and my husband to do something than this one! His ability to totally and fully describe the pain of infertility is phenomenal, but then to have an ability to show that healing from the pain is possible is overwhelming to say the least. You will cry (even my husband cried) while reading this book, and then you will feel so moved to get off your couch and do something for the hurting children of this world. We literally finished the book, signed up for Foster Parent training and then bought five more copies of this book to share with others. We are completing our foster parent training now and getting ready for our first placement. As Russell Moore states in the book...the orphan children is where the spiritual warfare is taking place in society. After our FP training we believe that whole heartedly! And we can not but keep asking ourselves...WHERE ARE THE CHRISTIANS? WHERE IS THE CHURCH?

Even if you are not considering adoption, you should read this book if you are a Christian. Russell Moore writes beautifully and backs his claims with copious amounts of scripture. He skillfully explains how central the act of adoption is to the gospel--that we are all adopted as sons (and therefore co-heirs with Christ). Just as our adoption in Christ creates a legal, "real" family, so also adoption in this life creates a real family. There is no distinction between biological and adopted children.Moore's call to action for the church is something that everyone needs to hear...adoption should not be something that Christians turn to as a "last resort" when infertility treatment is unsuccessful. Instead, our churches should wholeheartedly encourage and support adoption. We, the church, should look after orphans, grafting them into our families just as we have been grafted into the family of God.

Review

"The City That Ate Itself is an important contribution to the historical scholarship on resource extraction and industrial communities in North America, a literature that has grown significantly in size and sophistication in the past twenty years or so. Well written and well illustrated, the book makes novel links between the urban social history of the city (and experiences of its residents) and the “envirotechnical” landscapes of large-scale mineral production. In doing so, this study generates insights relevant to the environmental history and historical geography of mines and their cities well beyond Butte."  (H-NET Reviews)The City That Ate Itself makes a valuable contribution not only to Butte and Montana history, but also to the scholarship of the transition that many communities must undergo as they move into post-industrial futures.  (Montana The Magazine of Western History)

Review

“The City That Ate Itselfbrings together environmental history, labor history, social history, and history of technology in an entirely novel and highly compelling way. Many historians have taken on one or more of these topics in analyzing the history of Butte, yet none has brought them together as skillfully as Leech does here. Moreover, Leech’s focus on the postwar period is still fairly rare in the literature and highly valuable. The scholarship here is superb. Leech has immersed himself in both the primary and secondary material, and almost every page bristles with footnotes derived from entirely original archival research.” (Timothy J. LeCain)“The City that Ate Itself: A Social and Environmental History of Butte, Montana and Its Expanding Berkeley Pit is an in-depth history of Butte, Montana, that focuses on its infamous open-pit copper mine, the Berkeley Pit. Overall, the book’s scholarship is impeccable. Leech makes a persuasive case that Butte’s modern history has been dominated by the switch to open pit mining and the growing Berkeley Pit. While Butte has received a good deal of attention from social historians and historians of western mining, Leech’s focus on the modern open pit era of mining is genuinely new. Leech’s manuscript also makes outstanding use of oral history interviews as a source base. He has clearly devoted an enormous of amount of time and effort to research so many oral histories, even conducting many of them himself. The oral histories allow him to bring a fresh perspective to the social and cultural dimensions of open pit mining and community change. Other books in this field have emphasized technological changes or policy shifts, but the oral histories allow Leech to really get at the lived experience of those individuals in Butte who lived beside the growing Berkeley Pit.”  (Jeffrey T. Manuel)

This accessible and well-written book provides a window into Butte, Montana, which is home to the largest Superfund site in America, but is also home to a rich ethnic and labor history past. Leech examines his subject through environmental, social, technological, and labor history lenses, with the goal of unpacking the Berkeley Pit's impacts on the community from the 1950s to the 2000s. It's one of the first environmental histories I've read that actually acknowledges the power phenomenon of Superfund stigma, rather than hinting at it. It's also, as fellow Butte historian Tim LeCain notes, a rare history that focuses on Butte's post-war period, rather than another history of the mines.Leech breaks the book into chapters that address underground mining processes, a detailed examination of the myriad neighborhoods of Butte that were ethnic enclaves (and social glue), the evolution of neoliberal mining business practices and the weakening of the unions, construction of the Pit (which led to the destruction of several neighbors and the scattering of neighbors and identity) and abandonment of the underground mines, an envirotechnical examination of pit mining, and what Butte has done to reinvent itself since the shuttering of the mine when the Pit began to fill with water. Leech also tackles perceptions from within the community and without, and thoughtfully catalogues how Butte's residents, city-county government, and business community have tried to chart a path forward. This complex history also examines the topic of heritage preservation versus waste removal.Butte is a community incredibly proud of its industrial past, but it's also a community that wants to thrive in a (sort of) post-industrial future. The Berkeley Pit is not the only aspect of the Superfund site in Butte, and the mining company Montana Resources continues to dig an even bigger pit (the Continental) right next to the Berkeley, posing incredible environmental challenges to the city in the future. Butte is a city that resents being treated badly for its very visible scars, especially when the city contributed so much to the electrification of America and the WWI effort. The "Butte vs. Everybody" T-shirts popular in the city are a summation of how Butte residents ("Butte rats") feel about a state and a country that snub the city in subtle ways because of its Superfund designation. Butte doesn't fit in "Big Sky" country. It's not what people imagine when they think of Montana. But Butte's history is an integral chapter in America's history, whether Montana and the U.S. like it or not.Bottom line: Leech has written a fine book, and it should be required reading in every environmental history class or mining engineering seminar. What's more, this book is no declensionist narrative of environmental degradation. Rather, it proves that the community is perfectly capable of attaining a bright future for itself, but it's going to take even more work than it took to dig that Pit in the first place.

Nothing to dislike. Thoroughly researched, footnoted, etc. the book could easily be used at the college level especially the social andEconomic areas.

Beautiful, poetic, magical, and educational. A huge fan of Over and Under the Snow by the same author/illustrator duo, this follow-up does not disappoint. It's just gorgeous and my two year-old daughter and I instantly fell in love with their work, again.Perfect to add to your collection if you are particularly fond of nature, the outdoors, the changing of the seasons, gardening, insects, and the like.

I’m going to use this book in my K-2 Forest School classroom. So much to discover here! I had to order more of the series, as well as another one of this title, so my students could buddy read it together. It is on the surface a simple story, but you can read it again and again just looking at the artwork. How many invertebrates can you find? Can you draw a plant above and below the dirt? Draw/write about one thing that happens in each of the four seasons. Use play dough to make some of the creatures found in the book... or to make a model of a life cycle or a food chain you see. See what I mean? This book is packed! I don’t need textbooks in my classroom when books like this are so much more inspiring!-Karen

I bought this book for my 4 year old twins since it is now time to start planting out garden. It has lovely illustrations and a cute story that takes you through the life cycle of the garden by season. The book seems more durable than most paperbacks with thicker pages and a more durable cover. I bought a second one as a gift for another child I liked it so much. You can't go wrong with this book!

One of my favorite children's books ever. My one-year-old and four-year-old both love it. I love that it is both educational and whimsical. I struggle with finding children's books that I can stand to read over and over, and this one continually impresses me with the writing as well as the illustrations. At the back of the book, there are short paragraphs about each of the animals and bugs mentioned in the book, and we love reading through those too.

My 3.5 year old daughter loves to read and I get bored of the same books over and over. This book is unique and for a girl who loves anything outdoors (and a momma who loves to grow things) this is perfect. This book has become a favorite at our house.

My two-year-old daughter is very interested in worms and bugs and loves this book. I don't get tired of reading it a lot because it's beautiful to look at and the words have a lovely sound, too. Kate Messner was obviously thinking about how her book would be mostly read out loud when she wrote it and planned the page breaks.Great for kids who like bugs and dirt because the pictures let you see what's going on under the ground.

I really enjoyed how this book explain the process of trash becoming dirt and all the crawling insects that it involves! It never feels disgusting or scarry, but it rather helps understanding the cycle of life that nourishes us. Maybe better suited for a 5-7 years old. Now let's go dig in the yard... :)

This book is BEAUTIFUL inside and out. I bought this for our yearly summer-long daycare gardening unit. The kids are able to connect with the book, recognize plants, animals, and insects we see in our own garden, and I've even learned a bit from it, too.
