i really wanted to like this book. i regret now buying the second book at the same time as this was not entertaining at all. i thought it would be full of fun stories. i've heard rangers tell stories about what stupid people ask and do in the parks. the stories are rambling, all over the place, don't get to the point, and the rambling goes on and on. stories don't become funny because you end the story with an exclamation mark. there are a couple of funny stories, and if mr burnett would have stuck to just telling stories and telling what people ask and do in parks, he would have had a good book. with 30 years experience, there has got to be some great stories. he needs a better editor, no made up acronyms, not so much back story, no bouncing around parks, not so much background on the parks, just funny stories.

An interesting collection of stories from the author and other NPS Ranger friends about their experiences as a Park Ranger. While some are from major parks such as the Grand Canyon and Yosemite, others are relatively lesser known parks such as the Buffalo River in Arkansas where he had to help salvage a truck load of chickens from a truck wreck on a bridge crossing the park. Also some fun behind the scenes stories; such as trying to keep water running in their house in East Glacier, Montana and the party line when they were first at Lake Mead. He's been a Ranger since the 70s and this book is slightly dated (he references computer modems as current technology), so some of the stories are really old but still funny. Doesn't matter the year, people forget to pack their brains when on vacation. Some stories were redundant and the silly acronyms got a little old, but overall a good read.

The author relates his many years of on-the-job experiences with people, situations, and animal life in the US National Parks Service. He has an interesting sense of humor that often catches the reader a bit off-guard. I decided to pick up this book after hearing a segment from the Hey Ranger 2 book by a contributing member of the Park Service. Selected sections can prove to be a bit slower than others; but a great opportunity to learn much about the duties, living environment, and life styles of the dedicated park ranger staff and families in helping to prevent more significant disasters by the general public. The book arrived quickly from the seller and was packaged well for shipping in today's USPS "tear-it up" mails. I have been enjoying this book since receiving it and working progressively through the relatively brief chapters to learn more about another perspective of the ranger's dream job. A great recommended read; both for the information and the humor throughout. Some of the stories make one wonder about the challenges of today's modern travelers and their ability to remain safe without the helpful guidance from the periodic Hey Ranger support staff. Clearly much of this book preceded America's Funniest Videos, as well as Youtube videos, where life's occurrences are brought to life by the author's writings that transform text into vivid descriptions of blunders and near fiascos brought upon by the general public.

An okay read. The author seems to have a rollicking good story to tell but disrupts the flow with too many clever but quirky embellishments and off-topic ramblings. His creation of cute acronyms is harmless and funny the first few times but gets tedious after a while. Towards the end of the book I was skimming to get to the meat of each little story.

more stories about campers instead of Park descriptions. Also, would have appreciated more stories about his family and how they survived the Ranger living conditions and frequent relocation. There's a lot more for Burnett to write about and it's missing from this book. I quit reading about 3/4 into the book. Burnett tells a good story but they miss the target for for lovers of camping. Kudos to Jim for being a most excellent Ranger. I recommend he share his stories with the help of another writer to bring out the captivating and humorous tales that a National Par Ranger experiences in working with the public.

I really loved this book, and I am not a book person. I laughed out loud several times and re-told many of the stories to my family. My only complaint is that I thought the author made some of the stories longer than they needed to be and sometimes this distracted from the funny points. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the national parks and would read it again.-review by a teen reader / national park enthusiast

I'm rating this though I still haven't been able to wrestle it out of my dad's hands. I bought it and gave it to my husband but my dad was so intrigued he took it and hasn't given it back. Guess I should order another. My dad comes and tells us about the latest story he's read, laughing hysterically about every twist and turn. This couldn't be funnier if it had been written as total fiction.

Excellent quick read, well written. I zipped through with much laughter and reading bits aloud to my husband across the room. Then, sent it to his cousin who lives among the Oregon coast mountains and has traveled to many national parks.

The Little Red Hen (Makes a Pizza), by Philemon Sturges

From Publishers Weekly

Sturges's (Bridges Are to Cross) retelling of "The Little Red Hen" exudes charm, thanks to conversational narration and Walrod's (Horace and Morris But Mostly Dolores) delightful cut-paper images. One day, the feathered heroine, assembled from russet, fibrous paper stock and wearing a teal scarf, has a hankering for pizza and attempts to recruit the help of her neighborsAa yellow duck in a flowered swim cap, a cardboard-brown dog sporting a biscuits box and party hat and a hip blue cat with a beret and sax. But Sturges's modern fowl, rather than drafting helpers to harvest wheat, asks, "Who'll run to the store and get me some flour?" They reply with the classic, " 'Not I,' said the duck. 'Not I,' said the cat. 'Not I,' said the dog. 'Very well, then, I'll fetch some myself,' said the Little Red Hen." After repeating this ritual several times, the hen prepares her masterpiece solo. Time-lapse sequences show her kneading dough, grating cheese and slicing pepperoni. She holds no grudges against the duck, cat and dog, who share the meal, and all ends happily when the three volunteer to wash the dishes. Sturges makes the most of the repetitive formula and the hen's impulsiveness; each time the hen struts to the market for one thing, she can't resist buying "...some other stuff." Walrod's collages make cutting and pasting look like a breeze. She invents tidy packages for each miniature store-bought item and uses an abundance of textured paper stock for her fluent images. Her pizza pie really does look good enough to eat. Ages 3-7. (Sept.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-A funky rendition of the classic tale. Hen, having decided to make a pizza, discovers that she lacks certain necessities, such as a proper pan. "`Cluck,' she said. `I need a pizza pan.'" When she asks her neighbors to help her out, she gets the expected response: "Not I," said the duck donning her swim cap and tube. "Not I," said the dog wearing a box of dog biscuits and a party hat. "Not I," said the hep blue cat playing the saxophone. So off the Little Red Hen goes to the store to buy the things she needs-along with others she surely does not need, such as a guide to sink installation. When she finally gets her pizza made, the three unaccommodating friends change their tune. The plot takes two nifty twists at the end-and this Little Red Hen is not quite as punitive as in the original story. There's a keen sense of the absurd here, and the hilarious cut-paper illustrations are right in tune with the zany plot. This version can be pored over again and again as much can escape the eye the first time around. It is aimed at an older audience than Alan Garner's The Little Red Hen (DK Ink, 1997). Children who appreciate the humor of Jon Scieszka's The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (Viking, 1989) will fall under this book's spell as well. Destined to be quite the crowd pleaser.Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

We read this first at the library, and my son kept talking about it, so we bought a copy for home. This is a very cute retelling of the story of the little red hen. In this version, she makes pizza. Instead of refusing to share at the end because nobody had helped her, she does share the pizza with her three friends, who then in turn help with the washing up. Positive message, and fun illustrations done in a collage style.

It was a cute take on the classic story and had a slightly different ending, which my students weren't necessarily expecting. But I liked the ending as a good example to my students of kindness, sharing, and then still pitching in to help when someone shares and is kind to you. The students also enjoyed the silly little elements added, like the can of worms on the shelf or the extras that the Little Red Hen would buy.

I was shocked to find that the important life lesson in this classic children's tale had been distorted in this revised story. Instead of not participating in the fruits of the hen's labor, in this version the slackers who refused to help get to eat the hen's pizza anyway. Then in an apparent epiphany they do agree to clean up.Since young children enjoy hearing stories repeatedly, I purchased this book this book at the same time I ordered the classic version so my grandchildren could read two slightly different versions. After reading this revisionist version I threw it away. The classic version is the life lesson I want my grandchildren to learn and is the only version I gave them. The illustrations and physical book were fine. It is the revised message I object to and is the reason I threw the book away and do not recommend it to others.

Used to teach producers and consumers

Another great book to read aloud. I heard nothing but laughs in my classroom.

My daughter is 11 and this is still one of her favorite books. I just bought it in hardcover to give to her for her birthday, since apparently she is going to love it forever. The first sentence my daughter ever read (age four) was in this book, I found out years later. The sentence was, "Not I, said the cat."If the original story of the Little Red Hen bugs you because the lazy animals are motivated by punishment rather than reward, you will like this book much better. In this version the Little Ren Hen still gets no help in the production phase, but she shares the fruits of her labor anyway. Her grateful friends then clean up for her while she rests. Both my two daughters and I adore the illustrations in The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza. They are made by cutting and gluing various papers. I have looked at them of over 10 years, and I still always find something new to admire. I have looked for other books illustrated with cut paper by this same illustrator but have not found any, which is a true loss to the world of children's books.I'm a kindergarten teacher and I have to read The Little Red Hen as part of our Teamwork unit. I always read The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza afterward, and my students always like it better than the original because all the animals are treated well.I hope you and your family will enjoy your copy of The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza. You cannot go wrong with this book. It's great!

Love this.. much better ending than the original

This is an absolutely HILARIOUS book. Especially when you read it with the character voices.
