Well, this was unexpected. It seriously never crossed my mind that I wouldn't enjoy Dreams of Gods and Monsters after absolutely loving the previous two books. Maybe my expectations were too high, or perhaps the book and I really just didn't mesh well. Either way, I'm saddened. I was beyond excited, but also nervous to find out how Karou and Akiva's story ends. This series has been heartbreaking and beautiful, but also full of hope and a little humor, but most of that was missing for me from this finale. My biggest issue with Dreams of Gods and Monsters was that it felt long. It is long at just over 600 pages, but it felt never ending. There's a lot of detail, and many characters to follow, but it's also repetitive. Many scenes are repeated in adjacent chapters and this annoyed me to no end. It's not like I forgot what happened two pages ago and needed a reminder from another character's perspective. Then there's also repeats from earlier scenes that I don't think were needed. All of these things are short on their own, but they do add up and really messed with the pacing.Another element that I didn't care for--and which added to the substantial length--was the introduction of Eliza. I simply wasn't interested in her from the beginning. She felt like an addition just so we had a way to see what was happening in the human world while the Seraphim/Chimaera war was starting. She does wind up being important at the end, but all of her chapters bored me. Most of them are the same: her worrying about her dreams and anyone finding out who she really is. Then I was bothered by the fact that she had run away from home as a teenager, and wants nothing to do with her family at all, and yet her mother calls and texts her constantly. This made no sense, and seemed to only serve as a way for someone to expose her identity. To what purpose? I have no clue. I think she hurt Dreams of Gods and Monsters more than she helped. After the whole Eliza fiasco, I had to wonder what did happen in the human world after the war ended. I know it's not that important in the grand scheme of things, but humans were brought into it, so I want to know. There's no way to write away humans not noticing a swarm of angels, but what about when they found the Chimaera bodies? What about when the angels were gone? What happened to humanity?! Did they study the bodies? Write it all off as a hoax? What happened?! We see what happens in Eretz in the epilogue, but Earth is completely forgotten! There were parts of Dreams of Gods and Monsters that I loved, but those scenes were few and far between. They also didn't grab at me the way the other two books did, which was disappointing. I loved the tension between Karou and Akiva! I wanted to smash their faces together almost as much as Zuzanna did! I also found myself oddly drawn to Razgut and actually wanted a novella or even a full story about him and his past. Zuzanna and Mik provided some lightness that I appreciated, but overall I found them a bit out of place. So, in the end, Dreams of Gods and Monsters did not make me happy or satisfy my craving for more from this fantastic world. Everything felt drawn out and over complicated. And I'm not even going to pretend like I understood those last chapters all. It felt like a new book, with new world building, and a new plot was starting, then abruptly ending. It was a struggle for me to get through, since I felt like I was reading forever and making no progress. Dreams of Gods and Monsters will, of course, work for many fans of the series. I just couldn't get into it.

Akiva, Karou, Mik, Zuzana, Virko, Liraz, Thiago, the Misbegotten and the chimaera band together and defeat Jael, meanwhile learning about how Eretz got to be the way it is and why Stelians even exist in this world to the first place. But most importantly - surprise, surprise, Akiva and Karou DO finally kiss and makeup, but not "make up" as in "have hot, steamy sex" or "dirty Kirin cave sex" or even just "copious purple prose sex". Their sex is the "delicate kiss followed by SYMBOLISM followed by fade to black".That, my friends, is the story that took 600 pages to conclude. Not including the waste of paper, Book 2, clocking in at a whopping 517 pages.Reaching the end of this trilogy, I feel like I've been totally betrayed and conned by the greatest con artist of all time - an author who with her first pretty book (which while not as amazing upon reread was still decent) convinced me to buy hardcovers of all these books AND Kindle versions, only to give me the most unsatisfying conclusion in the world. I don't even get a smidgeon of smut, either from Mik and Zuzana (who are still somehow in this book, even though they've worn out their welcome eons ago) or Akiva or Karou! (view spoiler)This book is an obscene 618 pages long, and there's about 150 pages of story, 100 pages of new characters nobody cares about, 50 pages of Zuzana and Mik being annoying (by existing) and 300 pages of Akiva and Karou staring at each other, but unable to touch. Even Pushing Daisies let its main characters figure out how to effing consummate their relationship - and Ned could literally not touch Chuck!Taylor's propensity for verbosity leaped off the rails across the chasm, like the good old General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard. Yes, Laini Taylor can write. She can write like I've seen no other Young Adult author write (hell, even some ADULT authors!). In a day and age where the pedestrian, functional, often ugly writing is status quo, where Young Adult seems to mean "I couldn't bother to write better", Laini Taylor proves that an English Major isn't just for shizz and giggles. It is truly beautiful, magical, evocative and mysterious. But when you are wrapping up a plot, when you are trying to bring your two Mary Sues together (I'm sorry - Mary Sue and Marty Stu, because if you were looking for LGBT representation, keep looking), when you are trying to show a battle, maybe spending 3 chapters with your characters in a single conversation may be a little too much. This happens constantly. Every time something needs to happen, it must be told in triplicate (Karou waxes poetic on it, Akiva mopes about it, Liraz agonizes over it, Eliza is stunned by it), as beautifully and as long-windedly as possible. One scene that struck me as particularly superfluous was the scene where Eliza discovers the chimaera bodies. I am not questioning the fact Eliza should have discovered the chimaera bodies. I contest that we needed to spend that many chapters on detailing what they looked like, how they are buried, what the kasbah looks like because we saw them already from Karou's point of view! This is no new information, just regurgitating it.To make matters worse - the main plot of the trilogy is wrapped up at the 80% mark! What happens for the last 20% of the book? A brand-new plot is revealed! No spoilers, because I don't do that, but to those who thought "Return of the King" had too many endings - be prepared."Daughter of Smoke and Bone" was not like this. It was tightly written - beautiful, but it was obvious there was a point. It's like as the trilogy progressed, Taylor was given ever more leniency to spin poetic and write however many words she felt like she wanted. Or her editor went on vacation. And the fact is - if there was enough story or plot or character development, then 600+ pages wouldn't have been bad. But the fact is - no one changes or develops in this book. (Well, maybe Liraz (view spoiler) does. But one character out of a dozen?)Akiva and Karou are boring people. In English lit land, Akiva and Karou are both static characters - they are the same as they were in the beginning. They fell in lust because they were pretty, they dreamed about peace post-coitus, and they were torn apart. In this book, they are still the most gorgeous people on a planet of gorgeous people, they are still in lust with each other, and they still want to have peace. Nothing about them changed - and somehow, even though they spent 18 years apart, Karou not even knowing about her real life, they haven't grown apart, grown up at all. This is incredible - how many couples can survive 18 months without growing apart?! And couples that start like Akiva and Karou, who only got together because the other was hot and they made mad sex for a solid month?!The only dynamic character is Liraz and Liraz's story falls a distant second to our main character's Epic Twoo Lurve Story. Liraz's story is an interesting one - one of learning to embrace her emotions and learn who she is. Of course, that person seems to be one who, like most other characters, needs a man (view spoiler).Even Ziri, whom I did not actively hate, isn't a dynamic character. He's a great guy - and at the end, he's still a great guy. Period. The characters I actively hated were Eliza (whose purpose was revealed way too late in the trilogy), Zuzana (I want to shave off your eyebrows), Mik (and you are again?), Morgan Toth (I wish all mustache twirling villains looked like this), and Esther (what happened to you?!). They ranged from Class 1: Why are you here again? to Class 5: Your character is obnoxious and needs to go away. I know many love Zuzana and how Cute her Manic Pixie Dream Girl schtick is, but people...if this person existed in real life, I could not be friends with her. She is too obnoxious. And if I have to hear about how doll-like and "cute" she is, I will shoot rubber bands at her.So I know what you're thinking: "OMG, Crystal, you read these books and wrote all this about them - why did you bother?!"Why did I bother? Because I have a story for you - once upon a time, I read "Daughter of Smoke and Bone". Betwixt the cover of blue and black, I found a world both magical and endearing - the imagery of a young girl, playing with teeth, while overhead a brood of monsters watched her was vividly in my mind. I did once love DoS&B - when I reread the book to finish the trilogy I bought on emotional reaction to Book 1, I expected to love the book once again. To fall in love with the rest of the trilogy, to the world that once captured my heart and mind. But a tragic thing happened - the magic was gone. Yes, the beautiful writing on DoS&B was still there, in its exquisite beauty. But in that midst, I saw the flaws - the Mary Sues, the instalove, the retconning, the paper-thin plot, the stereotyped characters, the deus ex machina. These are things that have bugged me in numerous books, that I've spoken out about. Sure, if a story is good, if I get carried away on it, then I can ignore flaws. But where once I was able to float away on this story of angels and demons, I could no longer do so.I hate being a hypocrite. I don't want to be that person saying "This is right, but this thing that is almost exactly the same thing but ever so slightly different is wrong."And that's what this review is.The writing is gorgeous. I love the way Taylor writes (well, most of the time - again with the whole over-writing thing). But the story and characters and world and romance? It fell ever so flat for me.Of course, I think this is one review out of many, many other 4 and 5 star reviews. So I may be wrong. Maybe you'll love it - that's great. I wish you the best.

Really appreciate that the author is a native of the area.My only problem is that a tremendous amount of time is spent on Branson, and only a few sentences on places like Jasper. I hope this changes in the future edition!

The 2006 1st edition of this guidebook contained a good deal of worthwhile information. Unfortunately some of it was out of date by the time of publication. This was particularly true of Branson restaurants and shows. The new 2nd edition is much more timely and even more useful. For example, the author included information on the tragic Joplin tornado of 2011 and anticipated the opening of the impressive new Crystal Bridges Museum of Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. A few worthwhile places have still escaped inclusion. While the author continued to include the Springfield Conservation Nature Center, he again neglected the fine Wildcat Glade Conservation and Audubon Center at Joplin. Also he seemed unaware that Smallin Civil War Cave, an unusual and well-interpreted cave with the longest documented history of any cave in the Ozarks, has been reopen for several years at Ozark, Missouri. Hopefully these omissions will be taken care of by a 3rd edition. In the meantime, this 2nd edition should greatly enhance any trip in the Ozarks.

Purchased this to learn more about other opportunities outside of Branson. Not disappointed. Helpful info on all small towns, water trails, fishing resevoirs, lakes, and numerous caves to explore within about 3 hours from Branson.

Excellent guide to the Ozarks. However, the Ozark tourist still needs to supplement this guide with local knowledge when details as to costs, dates and times of events are required.

Super

I have only brouse through this book, and will not get to it until next Spring.

Very interesting if you live or want to live or travel in the Ozarks.

Richard K. Morgan’s mind truly is a dark place, and Altered Carbon is an impressive work of dystopian sci-fi. If you watched the mini-series, read the novel. I liked both, but there are major differences between the novel and mini-series that make each worth your time.

Not for the fainthearted. Seriously. When someone asks me for a book recommendation, I do not recommend this book or series if the person is underage, or if the person likes fairies and fluffy dragons, or if the person has never read at least some of the Classic Science Fictions works. When someone asks me for a book recommendation, and I think that person is smart enough and tough enough to read hardcore blindingly brilliant Science Fiction, I will recommend this book and series with the caveat: "You will either get totally sucked in and miss days of your life, OR you will run screaming.Your mileage may vary.

Wow, I was not expecting the book to be this good when I bought it. I typically have lower standards for books on Kindle Daily Deals due to the some of the offerings I see and the lower prices, but this book was amazing sci-fi/noir mystery. The writing was great and the whole story flowed very well to an exciting conclusion. This is a pretty long book in a very good way, I couldn't believe how much the author managed to fit in. The sci-fi concepts behind the book were also very interesting, had never read about concepts like this before. Definitely seems like a very realistic dystopian future in some ways and really makes you appreciate something as simple as human mortality. Background: I typically buy my Kindle books as part of the Kindle Daily Deals and plan them for airplane reading or times when I am away from home and cannot do more exciting or responsible tasks. This means that my standards are not too high and I am looking for books in the beach read category under the fantasy/sci-fi genres. I try to rate fairly on the star scale and personally consider anything 3 stars and up to be fine.

I made the mistake to watch the first series of Netflix's show based on this book before I read it. Also, I deliberately waited for a month or so after I finished the show because I didn't want that experience to interfere with the reading experience. I had done both things wrong. First of all, it's a great show, but that's not what I'm reviewing here. The book is so much better (as always). And because there were really big changes made when it was turned into the show, there is no reason not to enjoy both versions.I thought that the world building is really exceptional here. The whole system and the workings of society are very well thought out. The writing and also the twists and turns in the story elevate this book among the great classics, at least for me. It instantly became one of my all-time-favorites.So I'm planning to read the rest of the series for sure.I recommend this to sci-fi fans and detective story enthusiasts alike. Also, I recommend this to everyone :D

I half read & half listened to this novel because of time constraints (and the excellent deal kindle offered for the Audible content via whispernet). It's an excellently crafted piece of fiction that, while staying within the noir cyberpunk style of the first two novels, answers many lingering questions about Takeshi Kovacs and the mythology of his universe. The writing is superb and the story is top notch. However, I'd suggest that you read this novel and not listen to it via Audible. First of all, it's a different actor reading & a different director than used for the first two novels, which is in itself a little bit disconcerting. You can get past it, if it's done right, but they didn't do a good job.The actor, director and production team clearly never read the first two novels on the series and no one bothered to do some cursory research on simple things like name & location pronunciations. For instance, the actor pronounced the title character's name wrong (Takashi Kovacs' last name is pronounced "kovatch" which is pointed out by the protagonist in the first chapters of Altered Carbon and throughout the first two novels) and so the actor and production team never bothered to do a shred of research on the characters of the series. Secondly, they used a very annoying device to indicate flashbacks & memories. Instead of articulating a reference to a memory or flashback, they employed a ridiculous type of echoing sound. That is, all memories and flashbacks (and there are many throughout the novel) are recorded as if muffled. Or to try and describe a real world example, these parts of the story sounded like when your local newscast anchor loses his mic and you hear him in echo off of background audio, video as if from a distance & in a chamber. It's horrible and really annoying. Read this one & skip the Audible.

This is the opening volume of one of my favorite trilogies in all of Science Fiction - if by some chance you haven't read this, get it!Of course, that is only if you want an amazingly well-constructed SF work done as futuristic detective "noir" - it's got the plot, the thoughtful working out of how the particular tech referenced by the title affects society, a tough and resourceful protagonist, good/bad male/female cops/perps/vics - you name it.Finally, it passes a crucial test for me - it holds up quite well over multiple re-reads. Along with the other two books in the "Takeshi Kovacs" series ("Broken Angels" and "Woken Furies"), the author has carved out a universe that is great fun to experience - time and again.
