From Publishers Weekly
The final installment in the Tender Ties Historical Series continues the true story of Marie Dorion Venier Toupin, the Ioway Indian who accompanied the Astor overland expedition in 1812. Set in the emerging Oregon territory of the 1840s, the novel weaves together the social, political, theological and personal strands of Toupin's life. Against the backdrop of a struggle among Indians and Europeans for control of the land and its resources and between Catholics and Methodists for the souls of its inhabitants, Marie Toupin spends her final decade trying to make sense of her newfound Catholic faith and her ever-growing family. Interestingly, after she had written the first two novels in this series, Kirkpatrick learned that Toupin had given up her firstborn before leaving with the Astor expedition. Kirkpatrick writes him into this novel as a forgotten son and has Toupin experience the repressed memory of him as she also struggles with a neurological disorder that culminates in full-blown dementia. Toupin is not the only character who must make amends for the seemingly unforgivable: her son Baptiste brings home a child he has had with another woman for his wife to raise, and Toupin's daughter Marianne refuses to care for her best friend as that friend dies. But when these and other characters commit such offenses, they are neither demonized nor tidily redeemed. In combining historical authenticity with an exceptional ability to render poetic the thoughts of her characters, Kirkpatrick achieves a novel that enchants as it educates.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review
Praise for Books 1 and 2 in The Tender Ties Historical Series“Jane Kirkpatrick writes from a depth and richness of detailed research and from a genuine affection and respect for her characters. She gives us strong, admirable women with sensitive spirits, courage, and the capacity for unconditional love. Hold Tight the Thread is a thoughtful, skillfully prepared feast for those of us always hungry for more quality historical fiction. Like her other novels, this is a story that allows us to experience the struggles and adventures and faith of another time through characters we can learn to know–and love.” --B.J. Hoff, author of The American Anthem series and An Emerald Ballad “Hold Tight the Thread is such a satisfying ending to a wonderful trilogy on the life of such a memorable woman, Marie Dorion. I learned so much even as I felt a range of emotions —sad, happy, bittersweet, and triumphant. I love this book!” --Linda Hall, author of Steal Away and Chat Room “I highly recommend Every Fixed Star. Jane Kirkpatrick’s storytelling is deft and true; she breathes life into the long-ago Oregon country with warmth, emotion, and a deep understanding of the region’s people and past. With depth, creativity, and inspiration, Every Fixed Star provides a fresh view of this period in the Pacific Northwest’s history, showing the complicated dynamics between settlers, fur traders, missionaries, natives, and visionaries. Jane has vividly captured the history of the fur trade for intelligent women readers.” –Laurie Winn Carlson, author of Seduced by the West and On Sidesaddles to Heaven: The Women of the Rocky Mountain Mission “Jane Kirkpatrick has a rare gift, for her novels touch both the emotions and the intellect. She fills her stories with living history, each rich detail carefully researched and woven into a very particular time and place–the Columbia Country of the 1820s. And yet, Every Fixed Star is far from a dry history; rather, it is the moving, heartfelt story of one woman’s journey toward accepting her own failings as a wife and as a mother–a struggle common to every woman in every century. Through Marie’s ‘heart knowing,’ we are forced to examine our own hearts and lives and emerge the better for it. Jane’s novels are more than a ‘good read’; they are a life-altering experience." –Liz Curtis Higgs, author of Thorn in My Heart “[An] evocative, imagined retelling of the story of Marie Dorion, the remarkable Iowa Indian woman who crossed the continent with her young sons and her mixed-blood husband in 1811 as part of the first grand expedition after Lewis and Clark… As always, the historically accurate details are woven in with care, and the characters are fully imagined. At the story’ s end, the reader absolutely believes ‘Marie was an Ioway woman of the Gray Snow people; gray like the stuff that strengthened bones.’ A truly fine book.” –The Denver Post, in praise of A Name of Her Own, Book One of the Tender Ties Historical series

This last book in the series was kind of a sleeper. It was the end of the series and dealt with where the country was heading and how people were adjusting and what was beginning to happen to the Indians because of the expansion. Marie is an interesting character but although she is so strong in facing life's challenges, she is very weak in standing up for herself and letting go of hurt. She carries a lot of guilt and blame for her one son and spends a lot of time pining over him when he truly isn't worth it, which also pushes away the good people in her life. I enjoyed the first two books in the series immensely. It was still interesting and I learned a lot about the era.
This is another book in the series of 3 on the history of Madame Dorion or Walks Far Woman. She is an amazing woman. Although all three books are fiction based of fact, still they are very accurate. She was a real person, really had much of whats in the books happen to her. I highly recommend these books to anyone who wants to know what living in the Northwest was really like for women, Native American women and children. Also as to how the people we celebrate as being such great american Icons, like John Jacob Astor, John McLoughlin, and others of the American Fur Co. Astors Fur trading co. as well as the Hudson's bay co. All was not what we think. These books shed light on the amazing courage and stamina of the women of 1800's til now. We should be honoring these women for the courage they faced in the wild as well as dealing with hardships they faced among the forts, men, trappers and fur traders. Native men treated their womem with far more dignity and respect then many would be led to believe. Walks Far Woman is a testimony to this.
I recently finished the 3-book series and savored each book. The story is fantastic, but the author’s telling of it is even more rewarding! Jane Kirkpatrick is a master storyteller! I spent a long time reading the 3 books because I had a heartfelt need to savor and meditate on each one. My copies are now highlighted, notated, and underlined. I highly recommend them all!
This is Book Three in the series. Make sure to read Book One and Two. This book focuses on the last part of Marie's life. It is based on a true frontier story. The novel includes: lost sons, grandchildren, death, faith, conflicts, disease, the lives and loves of her children, daily life, and more. Excellent! This series and this book deserves an A++++++++
Did not realize I already have this book because I buy Jane Kirkpatrick's books whenever I see them so they do not go out of print and I haven't read them.
Love her books. Read all this series and was so enjoyable. Felt like I was in the story. Hard to put down.
I don't want to spoil anything, but my major questions from the other 2 books were answered.I was so sad for the story to end!
This series is beyond a doubt some of the best historical fiction I have ever read. I will be reading more by the author.
