I am having the hardest time with this review. Did I love this book. No. Yes. Well... Did I dislike it? Absolutely not. Well maybe. Depends on what you mean.As a disclaimer, I've read every book TJ has published. I read his first, Bear, Otter and the Kid (affectionately known to us Klunatics as BOATK) soon after it came out, and have been hooked ever since. I loved Burn. I loved How To Be A Normal Person. I loved, loved, loved Lightning-Struck Heart. I have loved everything he has written.This... is very different. It is almost certainly the best thing he's ever written. It is undoubtedly starkly, brilliantly beautiful. But I wasn't ready for all the FEELINGS. So many feelings. And not the usual angsty, lovey-dovey feelings we've become used to getting from TJ.TJ knows how to write a character to pieces. His characters, from asexual stoner hipsters to drag queens to hornless gay unicorns are fully formed and believable (yes, I said that and I'm sticking to it). And mostly lovable. Except - well - for now. I wouldn't call a single character in this book lovable. Except BadDog and SIRS - and they are a dog and a robot. And yet I cared for for every character deeply, even when I couldn't completely understand their motivation or their madness. Cavalo. Lucas. Alma. All beautifully, completely drawn and more complex than any character TJ has ever written.Though this is one of TJ's shorter full novels, it actually took me longer to read than any TJ Klune book to date. Usually I zip through them and then am SO sorry to see them end. But with Withered + Sere, it took me a bit of time to get into it. Once I did I found myself pulled away several times. I read other books. Not because W+S didn't keep my interest - but because I felt like I needed breaks from it. Needed to think about parts of it more thoroughly. It is his most thought-provoking book to date, bar none. And that's a good thing - it shows growth, maturity, evolution. With all this back and forth, I still give this book 5 stars. I can't get it out of my mind, and look forward to the sequel in August with equal parts anticipation and trepidation. But MAN am I looking forward to the Lightning-Struck Heart sequel now. I need some of that goofy, silly, patented TJ Klune snark in the worst way after being beaten down by W+S. So yeah. Loved it - in a very different way than I usually love his work. And that's a VERY good thing. Kudos, TJ.
Can a dog have a soul? Can a robot have a soul? Can a monster have a soul?TJ Klune’s latest book (the first of a two-parter, set in a post-apocalyptic America) is a startling departure for our young master of the overwrought inner dialogue. It is unquestionably the tightest, most powerfully written book to come from his creative mind. It is horrifying, compelling, violent, passionate, and desperately bleak. It is beautiful. It is brilliant. It is also, perhaps ironically, my least favorite of all of TJ’s books. It is not remotely romantic. It is barely gay. It has none of the things I crave when I read for pleasure. But that’s just me. With all its edgy masculine toughness, “Withered and Sere†has the potential for a real crossover audience—a straight male audience that’s into action stories. It is, interestingly, just the sort of book I think I could convince my straight-guy book group to read. (I joined assuming it was a gay book group. I was mistaken.)But TJ’s quirky presence is right there all the time, his great gift for character. Cavalo, the man at the center of the narrative, overthinks, as TJ’s characters are wont to do; but he does so with a sort of terse discipline that makes it fascinating to watch his mind work. His character is laid bare to us, gradually, as we come to understand just how he came to be where he is in this desolate burned-out world. Even amidst all the bleakness there are two characters that make us smile: Bad Dog, and SIRS. Bad Dog is a stray, whose story I won’t give away here. Cavalo talks to him, although neither he nor the reader is sure whether it’s real or simply delusional. SIRS is a robot, a survivor of the apocalypse, who is puzzling and strangely endearing, Imagine a psychotic C3PO with a wry sense of humor. Bad Dog and CIRS offer us two further windows into Cavalo’s soul, and help us see something that might be beauty amidst all the ashes. Then there’s the mute boy, the so-called Dead Rabbit, another stray that Cavalo unaccountably decides to pick up, driven by instincts that he doesn’t understand. Something about this young man’s insanity that touches Cavalo’s own madness, making it seem as if there’s destiny mixed up in all this. If this is a love story, it was written by Sauron. The title of the book is taken from a chilling little poem by Edgar Allan Poe, as is the title of the second volume, “Crisp and Sere.†I will gladly read it as soon as I can. Because I’m prepared, it won’t disappoint me, but it will surely make me sad.
Wow, you know, I am a long time fan and loyal follower of T.J. Klune. He's proven his ability to make me laugh, cry, and sigh. I trust him. But when I read the synopsis for this book, I hesitated. It sounded dark. He warned us it was dark. The reviews said it was dark. But, I trust T.J. Klune and his god-like storyteller powers so I bought it anyway. . . and started reading. . . and here I am writing a review 6 hours after I purchased the book. It was that good, people. T.J. Klune, I will never lose faith in you again! I will never hesitate because your s*** is just f***ing EPIC!*deep breath*So where to begin with Withered + Sere? Is it dark? Yes. Will the story suck you in like every novel produced by His Highness, T.J. Klune? Yes. Will you finish the last sentence and then just sit there in a daze processing what you just read? Yes. Will you get goose bumps when each character's depth of insanity is slowly revealed? Yes. Is the romance almost nonexistent? Yes.BUT IT IS SO WORTH IT.Read this. You won't regret it. I promise.
